Dr. Zarni or Maung Zarni has been a Burmese activist, grassroots organizer, scholar and educator for almost 30 years. He is an outspoken critic of Burma's autocratic rulers including Aung San Suu Kyi, an opponent of “Buddhist” racism, Islamophobia, hate speech and an advocate for human rights and minority rights. Zarni won the 'Cultivation of Harmony' award in 2015 for his contributions to global interfaith movements from the Parliament of the World's Religions, the world's oldest interfaith organization. As assistant professor of educational foundations, he taught briefly at National Louis-University at Chicago campus prior to becoming a full-time activist in 2001. Zarni was educated at the universities of Mandalay (Burma), California, Washington and Wisconsin, and lived and worked in Japan, USA, UK, Malaysia, Brunei and Thailand, besides his native Burma.
